Tremendous Treble Targeted By Signet Goofy Connections

Canine favourite Signet Goofy will go for a tremendous treble when representing trainer John Mullins in this month’s BGBF British Breeders Stakes at Nottingham Stadium.

The four-year-old has already conquered two Category One competitions by landing the Steel City Cup at Sheffield in 2022 before an outstanding pillar to post performance in this year’s Blue Riband added to his extensive honours list.

Sired by Magical Bale and out of Forest Natalee, the brindle dog is also the defending BGBF British Champion Stakes winner and won the British Bred Midlands Sprint Trophy at Nottingham exactly two years ago.

He’s been a dream to own for friends Lee Calcutt and Chris Waters. And Lee is hoping a return to the scene of his first major competition win can inspire his star greyhound to add to his four-race unbeaten run since the turn of the year.

“We’re being quite selective of what competitions we enter him in,” said Lee. “He’s been a fantastic greyhound to own and winning a third Category One competition would be brilliant.

“We’re keen to support British Bred competitions and he has his draw in trap six which he loves to run from. If he gets to the third bend in front in any of his races, he’ll be a hard dog to catch as he stays on strong right to the winning line.

“I can’t admit to knowing a great deal of our opposition, but I do know he’s still enthusiastic to race and he’s in good form.

“Any hiccup along the way we’ll have no hesitation in retiring him. But in a perfect world we’ll consider the Derby beyond this competition and potentially the veterans race on finals night if that doesn’t work out.”

Winning major events appears to run in the family for Signet Goofy.

He was part of the 2022 Produce Stakes final at Swindon where, incredibly, four of his littermates - Signet Otis, Sleek By Design, Westwell Emer and Signet Denver – also reached the grand final.

He’s been drawn in Heat Three of Monday’s opening BGBF British Breeders Stakes round where the top three greyhounds in each race will qualify for the following week’s semifinals. A £12,500 to-the-winner Grand Final is then scheduled for Monday, March 18.
